The Colonel Sanders Story Will Inspire You to Make Cold Calls
written by Pop Icon Mr. Cold Call™
True cold call success is the result of not giving up. It's the result of pure persistence. It's the result of consistent follow up with prospects and not letting rejection get in the way of your ultimate goal of building your book of business. Today, I want to inspire you with a short story of Colonel Sanders. Back in the early 1950's he started "KFC" (Kentucky Fried Chicken) at the ripe age of 65.
He traveled across the country by car from restaurant to restaurant, often sleeping in his car, living off his chicken and believing that his "secret recipe" would one day pay off. When he approached a restaurant owner and the reaction was favorable, he would then enter into a handshake agreement on a deal that stipulated a payment to him of a nickel for each chicken the restaurant sold. And by 1964, Colonel Sanders had more than 600 franchised outlets for his chicken in the United States and Canada.
That same year, he sold his interest in the U.S. company for $2 million to a group of investors including John Y. Brown Jr., who later was governor of Kentucky from 1980 to 1984. The Colonel remained a public spokesman for the company. In 1976, an independent survey ranked the Colonel as the world's second most recognizable celebrity. The most inspiring part about this entire story was that Colonel Sanders was told "NO" 1009 times before he sold his first piece of chicken. While this is quite atypical in the world of cold calling, it is an inspiring story that explains why there is one Colonel Sanders.
Those who succeed at cold calling know the idea and importance of continuous follow up to win future business. Salespeople who have this mindset in place are top producers at their company. So the next time that you see the Colonel please take a minute to congratulate each other because now you know what it takes to really succeed!
