After making such an enormous amount of cold calls you would think that I've learned quite a bit. And it's true because I really have learned a lot. I've spoken with so many different types of business professionals. It's really amazing how many different types of personalities there are in this world. For every telephone sales encounter that you've had, I could probably match your examples with tons of examples of my own.
One might ask, "Have you ever just had enough?" Yes, I've been there. And yes, I've been there more than just once. I've been there hundreds of times. And yes, I"ve felt the frustration and helplessness of cold calling--it certainly takes a toll on you. There have been so many times when I've felt like just throwing in the towel and just giving up. With so many calls logged to my name, I've also learned to find a way. For each phone interaction that didn't work well, I found ways to make it work the next time around.
Thomas Edison once said, Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward." What way are we talking about here? What step forward are we talking about? We're talking about the importance of testing. If you held one of my most precious possessions from me, that being my telephone, and demanded that I give you just one lesson that I've learned from all the cold calls that I've made, what would I say? I would respond with just one word and that word is called testing.
From today forward, after every single call that you make ask yourself, "What could I have done differently." Let's suppose the prospect that you just called didn't sound that interested on the phone and then the call went sour." What could you have done differently? What if you were to do a little more research on their website? What if you were to do more research on their industry? What if you found real-life statistics and incorporated these statistics into your initial conversation with your prospect? How much more effective do you think that your call would have been? How much more interest would have you created on the telephone with your prospect?
It really doesn't matter what you do the next time around. What really matters the most is that you try something new and different. If what you tried the next time around doesn't work then just try something else. Be innovative and immense yourself with thoughts of strategy. The idea and practice of testing is your ticket to more successful cold calls and your results will without any doubt help to electrify your sales.
